How to Create a New Life Vision

Goals

11 Jul

Many of us at a younger age created visions of what we thought our life would be like. Even if the vision was just in our heads, we thought about what we would be doing in a career, what our relationships would be like, how many kids we’d have, and where geographically we wanted to live. For some, that vision has come true. For others – they followed a different path which still led to a happy and fulfilled life. And there are others whose vision did not come to fruition and their reality is anything but sunshine and rainbows. The vision from long ago is only a dream and instead, their reality is filled with unhappiness, sadness, and regret.

If the latter is you or someone you know – please keep reading.

In my Embracing Change: Aligning Your Past Life Vision with Your Current Reality, I helped you find a portion of your past Life Vision that is still possible to achieve today. It provided 10 questions that will help provide clarity in making part of your Life Vision possible. You can read that blog here:

Embracing Change: Aligning Your Past Life Vision with Your Current Reality

However, If there is no part of your Life Vision that is realistically unattainable anymore – it’s time to create a new Life Vision from where you are today. This is a step that most people don’t realize they can do. If you’re feeling sad because your life didn’t turn out the way you thought it would with your career, relationship, health, etc… it’s time to create a new Life Vision.

how to Create a New Life Vision

Grab a piece of paper and a pen. Follow these steps to find peace with the past and to get excited about your future.

Write down your past Life Vision

1. What did you want your life to be like?

2. Why did you want it?

3. What did you believe it would give you?

4. How does not having this in your life make you feel about yourself today?

5. What regrets do you have?

That’s a tough exercise but an important one. We want this to be the last time you consider the old Life Vision as your only key to happiness. It’s time to bury it. We cannot go into the past and change any of this so we must let go of what we cannot control. It’s not the past vision that is making you sad. YOU are making YOU sad by focusing on it.

You have two choices – stay sad or allow the past Life Vision to Rest in Peace while you create a new compelling vision.

Take the past Life Vision you wrote about and destroy it. Light it on fire. Rip it into pieces. Put it at the bottom of the birdcage. But before you destroy it – first….state the following out loud:

I honor and release my past vision, knowing it was a reflection of who I was then. I let go of any attachment to this vision and the belief that it was the only path to my happiness. I trust that my new journey will lead to fulfillment and joy. I am excited to create a new vision that aligns with who I am today. I embrace this fresh start with an open heart and look forward to the amazing possibilities ahead.

Breathe….Destroy…..And move onC to the next section

STEPS TO CREATE A NEW LIFE VISION

Now it’s time to look forward to the future by creating your new Life Vision. As you are creating this do not allow your brain to tell you why you cannot have it. New Visions require an upgraded version of yourself. A version that is solution-focused and is unstoppable in creating the life you want, the life you desire, the life you deserve!

  1. What are 3-5 things that if I put my attention towards it would make a positive difference in my level of happiness now and in the future?
  2. Why are these things important at this stage of my life?
  3. How will it feel to make this a reality?
  4. What characteristic trait(s) do I embody that will help make this happen?
  5. Of the 3-5 things – which one is most important? What makes it the most important?
  6. What is the first step in making this a reality? By when would you like to see this come to fruition?  Schedule the time to take the first step.
  7. Read your new vision every day. Smile when you read it so that the brain associates positive emotion towards it. Hang it up where you can see it. Consider creating a vision board.
  8. Let your friends or family know how they can support you in creating this new vision.

Continue to make progress on your list of actions until your vision is a reality. This could take 6 months, 12 months or 3 years. There is no deadline! It is only important to keep taking action.
