I absolutely love this time of year! From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, the season is
packed with holiday spirit—Pumpkin Spice Lattes, holiday music, and those almost-daily
deliveries from Amazon.
I still find myself reminiscing about the good old days of bustling malls, festive
decorations, and long lines of excited kids waiting to meet Santa. Sadly, malls (at least
in my area) are a thing of the past. Now, most of my shopping happens online, which
just doesn’t have the same magic. But you know what? I’ve discovered new joys:
decorating my home, sipping holiday cocktails with friends, and curling up to watch
Hallmark movies.
It’s a blessing to enjoy these moments. And if you’re someone who can shop, decorate,
spend time with family, and meet up with friends, you’re blessed too.
Still, this time of year isn’t cheerful for everyone. For many, the holidays bring loneliness
instead of joy. It’s easy to get wrapped up in our own celebrations and forget that some
people don’t have loved ones to share these moments with.
Here are 3 simple ways you can brighten someone’s holiday season while making your
own feel even more meaningful:
Visit an Assisted Living Facility
Call your local assisted living or retirement home and ask if there are residents who
might appreciate a visitor. Many elderly people don’t have family nearby, and a simple
visit can make their day. Ask about their favorite holiday traditions or childhood
memories—they love to share stories and just need someone to listen. When I
volunteered at Cedar Valley Hospice, I was amazed at the joy that came from those
conversations.
Reach Out to Friends Who Might Feel Alone
Do you have single friends, or those who’ve lost loved ones, or are spending the
holidays far from family? Send them a quick text, invite them to a holiday event, or drop
off a small treat. Even a tiny gesture can remind them that someone cares.
Donate or Volunteer
The holidays are a great time to give back. Whether it’s a donation to a food bank,
helping at a homeless shelter, or providing essentials to a women’s shelter, your
contribution can make a big impact.
Giving your time and kindness isn’t just good for the community—it’s a gift to your soul.
Happy Holidays! ✨
