5 Lessons to Elevate Your Wellness Game over 50 with Brooke Simonson

As I always say – there are many blessings that come with aging. Every birthday is worth celebrating! Today we are talking about something I am NOT finding the blessing in – my metabolism. Being able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want died 20 years ago. In 2022 I was starting to understand that the older I got the more challenging it was to look and feel my best. 

I realized that although I was exercising on the regular – it was pointless unless I learned how to eat better too. I had reached my threshold of not feeling my best and wanted to make a change. Back then, I knew the basics of eating better (low carb, less sugar, more protein), but I wasn’t getting the results I was looking for. Clearly, I was doing something wrong.  So – off to YouTube, Google, and the Socials I went! Hours later, the only thing I gained certainty in was that the World Wide Web was saturated with contradictions on the topic of healthy eating.  

This isn’t working. I wanted to talk to a real person, someone I could trust and someone relatable (AKA: Not a 25-year-old with a 6-pack) 

And then … I found her –  Brooke Simonson Certified Nutrition Coach. She was willing to talk to me and even better – she was willing to have the conversation on my podcast Age Slayers with Traci Lynn so that my Gen X sisters could learn from her too! 

By the end of the podcast, I was motivated and excited to get started on this health journey so much so that I invested in her Health Investment Course. She has a way of making it easy to learn and incorporate healthy habits without overwhelming, stress or frustration. I am still using what I learned in that course today.

2. Metabolism Myths Debunked:

The second revelation was a real eye-opener – the myth that women’s metabolisms plummet after 50! While metabolism does slow with age, it’s not a steep nosedive many fear. Anyone can tweak their nutrition and exercise routines to keep their metabolic fires burning and achieve weight loss at any age.

3. Proteins and Barbells over Pills and Beliefs:

This is necessary for aging women, in particular, to focus on protein intake and strength training. It’s crucial for maintaining muscle mass and bone strength. So rather than reaching for magic pills or believing that age makes health decline inevitable, it’s about empowering oneself through nutrition and weights. 

4. The Compound Effect in Health:

Use the application of the financial concept of compounding to health habits. Small changes, when consistently applied over time, can have significant results. Whether it’s opting for the stairs, a side of vegetables, or an extra glass of water, these habits compound into a wealthier health portfolio. 

5. Embracing Individuality in Your Health Journey:

Perhaps the most liberating lesson from the podcast is understanding the personalized nature of health. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach that works when it comes to eating patterns and fitness regimes. By prioritizing protein, produce, and healthy fats, and tailoring habits to personal preferences, one can craft a health plan that resonates with their unique lifestyle and goals.

Brooke’s insights are a testament to the fact that cultivating health is both an art and a science. It’s about finding the sweet spot between what’s proven to work and what feels right for you.
